The concept originated in Australia as Hire A Box, where it sold out the entire country in just over eighteen months.

The expansion effort of Kona-Ice, a shaved ice concept based in Kentucky, started in December of 2008, right after the election, over the holidays, during the height of our current recession. Thus far, over 40 units have been sold in the United States over the past seven months.
